Darrin's Diary...

God Bless and Keep Bernie Mac...

I woke up Saturday morning at 9 to get ready for work and as usual I checked my myspace page from my cell phone. I saw multiple condolences for Bernie Mac.

I jumped up from my bed and was like, "God no."

I turned on CNN and sure enough, the headline was that Comedian Bernie Mac died at 50 years of age.

I was truly sad. Truly sad. He was a great man, a great talent and he knew where he came from and never forgot.

I had the pleasure of meeting him once years back when he was promoting his book, "I ain't scared of you." This was before he really blew up and as he was making a mark with the Bernie Mac show. He talked about everything in the book from fights with his wife to struggles here in the Chi. It's a great read.

Back then, I think I had just two or three books out and even then as today, I am not as popular as I would like to be as an author. I remember telling him this and he said, "Just keep pluggin there young brother. It's not a matter of if it will happen but when it will happen."

He signed my copy of his book and I gave him one of mine and was proud...truly proud that he took the time at his signing to give me words of encouragement.

I loved his standup, he was great in the oceans eleven, twelve and thirteen series and I still
watch reruns of the Bernie Mac show. Like Don Cheadle said, "Heaven just got funnier."

When someone dies young (and 50 is young, believe me) it makes you reflect. It makes you think about your own mortality; your own accomplishments and failures. When a light like Bernie's, Luther or Gerald Levert goes out, the world truly seems dimmer. Especially in the African American Community.

Anyway I could go on and on, but like I said, God Bless and Keep Bernie Mac.

As a tribute, I am asking everyone redaing my page to buy his last book, "Maybe You Never Cry Again."

I am sure the proceeds for the book will help his family. I think we should get together here in the Chi (readers, politicians, leaders etc.,) and inquire about a Bernie Mac Foundation if there isn't one already.

That's how we support one another, even in death. I say we all go out and grab a copy of his last book in tribute. I ordered mine today.

In the meanwhile, peace.
